Schooling in Botswana is not mandatory. The first ten years, starting at age six, is however free. There are seven years of primary school, the first four of which are taught in Setswana. After that, classes are taught in English. After primary school, students then move on to three years of junior secondary school. Upon completion of the third year, students take their junior secondary examination. If they pass, they can either choose to end their education or go on to two years of senior secondary school, which is not free. If they choose to continue their education, they take the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education, which is required for any form of higher education, be it vocational or college. There are a few different options for college, the top of which being the University of Botswana.
